A rising Sunshine Coast sporting talent has earnt himself selection in the Queensland U19 Cricket team and will travel to Adelaide in December.
Former Chancellor State College student Brodie Murphy was selected in the 13-man squad after his performances with the Sunshine Coast Scorchers and will compete at the National Championships from December 15-22.
Murphy, 19, who is a representative of the Maroochydore Cricket Club, has taken 17 wickets from 51.3 overs in the South East Queensland second grade competition this season.
The bowling all-rounder said it was a welcomed surprise when he answered the phone call of former Australian fast bowler and under 19 head coach Ryan Harris.
“I was just at home studying and got a call from Ryan Harris who told me that he had selected me in the Queensland team,” he said.
“I couldn’t believe it, I instantly started shaking and asked if he was serious, so it was a massive shock to me as I didn’t expect to be selected but it was really exciting.”
Currently studying clinical exercise physiology at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Murphy said he was eager to learn and improve in an elite level environment.
“I am very excited to get around the group of new faces, start a new journey and hopefully we can have a good campaign in Adelaide and make Queensland proud,” he said.
“It will be a privilege to learn from Ryan Harris and hopefully better my game.”
The only player selected from the region, Murphy joins a squad made up of players from Wynnum, Western Suburbs, Redlands, Northern Suburbs, Gold Coast, Toombul and Valley District cricket clubs.
“I’ve grown up playing against most of the people in the team but to finally put our skills into the same team will be very exciting,” he said.
Murphy would take part in weekly training sessions at Allan Border Field in Brisbane over the coming weeks.
