Batsmen fight hard for rewarding results

Batsmen seized the day to close Round 15 in SCCA Division 1 fixtures, as they fell over the line at Maroochydore, broke records at Gympie and saved outright losses at Caloundra and Glasshouse.

At Manthie Oval, Sammy Curtis, Queensland Cricket’s area manager and also the Sharks’ coach, relived his glory days at Wairarapa across the ditch to post 161 as the visitors easily ran down Gympie’s 221.

Starting the day needing to limit the Gold’s overnight 6/211, the Sharks’ opening bowler Tiaan Scheepers solved the problem to take his tally to 4/34 in just four more overs, setting a chase of 222 for the visitors.

This would match the young club’s previous highest total set in their win over Nambour in Round 12.

Lacking experience, the Coolum top order has been fragile without elders Curtis and Tim Hynes, both returning from injury in this game, and both were soon at the crease at a too-familiar 2/5.

Kelvin Cochrane, returning from his Scorchers’ experience, was responsible for both, but would have to toil until the 61st over for his next, just after Curtis had stroked the winning run.

The senior players had lifted the Sharks to 98 before Hyne’s demise on 27, while Curtis, with 15 fours and three sixes, pushed Coolum’s highest individual score from his unbeaten hundred in Round 8 to greater heights as the visitors mounted their greatest total at 286.

Tewantin-Noosa resumed on 5/64 at Kev Hackney Oval, more than halfway to the Swans’110, in beautiful batting conditions ready to claim possibly second spot on the ladder.

At the end of the session, after 24 overs of agony for the Thunder followers, the innings closed at 111, two balls after Tom Freshwater’s slash to third man had reached the boundary, the target, and the ladder position.

Starting the morning for the Thunder were Jarrod Officer and Dom Taylor, the senior players the visitors needed to guide the way, both scoreless.

Sam Gunson, replacing Mark Jackson with the ball to complete the over, confirmed his specialist batsman status with two wides and two runs to get Officer off the mark as the visitors commenced their crawl to the line.

Officer went for a dozen as the Thunder reached 81, bringing Scott Aufderheide to the crease, with Luke McInnes taking his third of an eventual five wickets, strangling scoring while the total went to 99, enough to calm some of the visiting spectators’ nerves.

With Reid Anderson miserly at the northern end, the loss of Aufderheide, then Taylor for 8/102 had Tewantin skipper Jake Dennien out of his seat, not to settle till after lunch.

Tommy Freshwater and Cody Pyne were now facing, as Callum Stitt replaced Anderson, and Pyne’s stalwart one run innings off 17 deliveries ended spectacularly as McInnes, at short cover, horizontally intercepted a foot-high off drive.

This set the scoreboard at 9/104 and pulses well into three digits as Freshwater shepherded a

cautious Lea, who had turned a single of Stitt’s last ball then negotiated a McInnes maiden.

Singles off each over then had Freshwater facing the 67th over, starting at 9/107, the wider fourth ball from Stitt lighting up the batsman’s eyes for the full stroke, and there are no diagrams in the scorebook of the closest of victories.

Caloundra and Nambour, both down on the first innings on day one, showed second innings courage to stave off outright defeat against Caboolture and Glasshouse respectively with unbeaten second stands.

At Henzell Oval, the Lighthouses closed the day at 7/168, building on skipper Wally Wright’s 94 to stifle Caboolture’s 3/226 declaration hopes of an easy roll after the home side’s first innings 100.

Zac Martin posted a maiden century, unbeaten on 136 as the visitors possibly rued a slow final session on day 1.

Nambour denied Dan Cahill his first century of the season when Corey Perren bowled him in the first over after resuming on 97 as Glasshouse batted on to 4/252 at home.

Steve Ledger’s 41 and a PB 67 from Angus Douglas, whose determination to frustrate the Rangers’ outright hopes kept him in the middle for 222 deliveries.

The visitor’s 9/171 at the end kept Glasshouse in third spot as Tewantin-Noosa improved.
