Another massive performance from Aspley Hornets QAFLW player Jessica Stallard has all but guaranteed her a spot in the Queensland women’s squad ahead of their match against Tasmania in June.

The 24-year-old key forward is a major reason for the Hornets undefeated start to the season as she’s recorded 15 goals from the first five rounds.

Aspley head coach and QAFLW 2023 coach of the year Luke Glacken said Stallard has continued to flourish for the brown and yellow after first making her QAFLW debut in 2022.

“She took her off season pretty seriously and did a fair bit of work in the gym which is starting to pay off on the field,” he said.

“She’s made sure she has put in the extra work before and after training to knuckle down the importance of inside 50s.

“She’s definitely deserving of that Queensland spot and I guess the challenge for her now is continuing to perform knowing there’s some extra eyes and extra expectation of her.

“It’s all one week at a time for Jess as she’s remained very humble and is keeping a great level head but is focused on performing for Aspley, then Queensland and hopefully bigger and better things moving forward.”

Stallard’s 2022 season consisted of 10 goals from four games before exploding in 2023 to finish as the competition’s leading scorer with 32 goals from 17 matches.

In round five Stallard finished with five goals and a behind against Bond University but also recorded 14 disposals, five contested marks and seven tackles.

Glacken said he was happy with his side’s opening performances.

“As much as Jess has been a standout player it’s been a real team effort to get to where we are at the moment,” he said.

“Without the supply she wouldn’t be in a position to kick those goals but it’s great to have someone with the determination and field presence to finish off the team’s good work.

“To be able to start with five wins in a really competitive league and one with even more talent is great, but there’s still a long way to go and we know we have to continue to be consistent.”
