Rising Queensland apprentice jockey Cody ‘Chip’ Collis is carving out a name for himself in after some impressive performances across South-East Queensland.

The 21-year-old was first introduced to racing by his dad who Collis claims would be ‘one of Queensland’s worst punters’.

After bouncing between trainers in regional and North Queensland, Collis made the decision to relocate to the Sunshine Coast at the beginning of 2024.

Collis has recorded 32 wins and 27 placings from his 114 provincial starts this season.

“I’ve had a few misdemeanours where I haven’t found my footing or been happy in a lot of places so I’ve shifted trainers and moved bosses a few times but I’ve absolutely loved my time on the Sunshine Coast the past few months,” he said.

Collis is apprenticed to leading provincial and Corbould Park trainer Stuart Kendrick.

The duo share a 36.88 per cent win and 59.6 per cent place strike rate from 57 starts this season.

“Stuart and I get along and gel really well as he knows how to get the best out of me,” Collis said.

“His efforts have gone a long way to share a healthy relationship not only as a boss but as a friend as well.”

Collis also credits his form to the help of multiple Group 1-winning jockey and current trackwork supervisor Damian Browne.

“He’s improved my riding out of sight,” Collis said.

“I’ll be at his house once a week at least to go through fitness training, watch replays and knit pick different things I can improve on and implement at the jump-outs, track work and on race day.”

The rising star said he was proud of his efforts over the past few months and thanked those around her for their support.

“It obviously helps when you’re getting good rides for the leading trainer but I’m very grateful and it’s nice to see everything falling into place,” Collis said.

“I’m looking forward to hopefully riding in the metropolitan ranks when the time comes which is very exciting but it would be great to push for the Sunshine Coast premiership first and maybe an opportunity interstate further down the track.”
