A childcare centre with a yoga studio for parents and a design inspired by local forests, lakes and mountains is planned for the Sunshine Coast.

A development application has been lodged for a Habitat Early Learning Centre at Peregian Springs to offer Montessori early education from birth to school aged children.

The centre would replace a vacant commercial building that was previously used as a property sales office at 2 Longwood Drive.

The proposed plans submitted to Sunshine Coast Council said that the centre would help meet demand for community facilities.

“Given that population growth is anticipated to continue into the future, the proposed childcare centre will accommodate families seeking childcare services in order to assist with parents returning to work,” the proposed plans submitted by Northgroup Consulting, on behalf of the developers, said.

It said it would complement existing centres in the area including Edge Early Learning, C&K Peregian Springs Community Kindergarten, Little Saints Early Learning and Bambini Early Childhood.

The application said it would offer a Montessori program to help give parents greater choice.

In Montessori childcare centres, children are encouraged to move around the playroom freely and learn through hands-on interactions in a stimulating environment.

Children are grouped heterogeneously into three classrooms: ‘Nido’, a nurturing, home-like environment for infants; the ‘Infant Community’ for children up to three years and the ‘Children’s House’, a scientifically designed environment for children from the age of 3 years.

It would cater for 93 children across five activity rooms from 6.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday and have a commercial grade kitchen.

Developers Longwood Drive Constructions – directed by Antonia Harriet and Murray John Thornton - also thought of the parents with a mothers room, yoga studio and a generous sized carpark.

The design statement said that the facility would be “beyond the standard model for early learning” and added that it had a strong focus on enhancing the experience for parents and children.

It said the building and landscaping would be inspired by Lake Weyba, Noosa National Park and Mt Emu.

It said the centre would have four full-time employees, supported by casual staff.

The code-assessable application is for a 2553 sqm site in Peregian Springs’ local centre zone.
