Coast residents have been urged by NBN Co to establish an internet back-up plan should disaster strike during the dangerous storm season.

The loss of power remains the single biggest threat to the NBN as equipment connected to the network will not work during an outage.

STORM WARNING: Destructive winds, hail to smash Coast

While some parts of the NBN have in-built back-up battery power, mains power outages may last longer than the available battery power reserve.

NBN Local Queensland head Kylie Lindsay said no technology, including the network, was 100 per cent fail-safe during natural disasters.

“In times of disaster, NBN has always been on the ground as soon as possible to provide temporary communications facilities to communities and emergency services while our technicians work to get areas back up and running,” she said.

“But the reality is, residents need to be prepared to be without services for some time.

“This is because NBN will prioritise reconnecting essential services, such as community infrastructure, hospitals, fire, police and emergency services.

“We will also work to prioritise the reconnection of business services essential to community recovery, such as banks, petrol stations and supermarkets.”

Ms Lindsay said NBN Co recommended that residents put together an emergency kit should the power be cut.

Other tips included:

– Staying mobile: Have a charged mobile phone and portable mobile battery pack ready to use if there is a power outage, or if your connection to services over the NBN network is disrupted in an emergency event

– Tune into local info: Local radio is a great source of information during an emergency, with battery powered radios a good way to tune in

– Backing up information: Consider digital back-up of important files or images so they can be accessed from anywhere
