Within seconds a mother and son were dragged into a danger when they were swept up in a flash rip at Alexandra Headland on Sunday.

Quick-thinking lifeguards pulled the woman, aged in her 40s, and her son from the water.

They were swimming between the flags around 11am when they become caught in a flash rip.

Lifeguards responded immediately as a large set of waves came down on top of them, according to a witness.

Lifeguard Zac Turner said they were dragged out to “a really dangerous area”.

“It all happened within 30 seconds, they were in a really bad spot, but we got to them and that’s all that matters,” he said.

Mr Turner and another lifeguard performed a board rescue in the challenging conditions.

They managed to bring the pair back in, with the boy walking from the surf first.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics provided treatment at the scene.

A service spokeswoman said paramedics took the woman and child to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in stable conditions.

Mr Turner said the dangerous conditions were expected to continue for the next few days.

“With this building swell and dangerous, rough conditions we’re reminding people to swim between the flags and within their ability,” he said.

“Things can change so quickly … the ocean is a dangerous place.

“Swim between the flags and if you’re in doubt don’t go in the water or speak to a lifeguard before you do.”
