GoPro Hero10 Black: Is this the ultimate camera for pooch and holiday fun?

After a hectic day at my home office, my favourite thing to do is to take the pooch on a long walk on our favourite beach.

In the afternoon, in the golden hour, the light is magic.

It’s the same in the morning, just after the sun comes up.

In the right light with some good scenery, you can get some really stunning photographs with the GoPro Hero 10 Black edition.

Watching Ava scurry along sandy paths to the beach, climb a little hill and then zoom down to find friends is beautiful every time.

Seeing her zooming back towards me and then lunging at the last minute is almost the same as having your child run up to you with arms outstretched, saying ‘Daddy, daddy’.

I’m well known for taking lots of photos and video of our beach adventures.

The GoPro Hero 10 Black captures some great underwater colour and if you want to up the saturation, there's a range of filters to do that.

Most of the time I take my phone but in recent weeks, I’ve been playing the latest GoPro Hero 10 Black and some of the videos and photos we’ve been able to capture have been awesome.

The 10 is a huge step up from earlier models.

I’ve been using a Go Pro 7 for a couple of years and have loved it.

The GoPro Hero 10 Black produces some pretty interesting shots.

But it has had some super annoying traits – most of which have been eliminated with the latest GoPro.

One of the most annoying things I found is returning after a shoot in the water only to find your footage is useless because there was a big drop of water on your lens.

The new lens repels water a lot better.

The camera is even lighter than the previous model, making it easy to carry along on your walk.

But that’s just the beginning of a long list of improvements which include far better stabilisation, much more details in video and photos, faster uploads to your computer or phone, greater low light performances and a more responsive touchscreen.

The slow motion performance is incredible to see, as you can see from the scenes with Ava from the beach in the above video.

We did shoots with people diving into a rock pool as well as waves crashing on rocks and just loved the results.

A GoPro is a great photo companion for a beach walk or swim.

Professional photographers, who have previously canned the GoPro have given the Hero 10 Black rave reviews and for good reason.

It is one superb piece of equipment in such a small rugged package that you can take it anywhere or strap it onto anything – whether it be a motocross bike hurling along a track or a skier zooming down the icy slopes.

The Hero 10 features a new GP2 processor which has allowed for higher frame rates, and new 5K/60p, 4K/120p and 2.7k/240p shooting modes.

The camera has some super slow motion technology which allows you to capture things like the crashing of waves in greater detail.

Photos can be captured at a super detailed 23MP. You can do 8 times slow mo at 2.7k and grab 19.6MP stills from the 5K 4:3 video, up from 12MP in the Hero 9.

You can also shoot in SuperPHoto HDR and RAW formats and livestream at 1080p.

There’s also better tone mapping and 3D noise reduction while when you are watching the action there are higher frame rates on the front LCD screen.

One of the problems shooting video with a GoPro is getting your horizon straight. But this has been overcome with horizon levelling which now offers a tilt increase to 45% up from 27 degrees.

The Quik app which comes with the Go Pro is great to use and has some cool filters to really pump up the colours.

The Hero 10 has a new lens cover which promises to be more scratch resistant, is removable and offers less ghosting as well as the ‘hydrophobic, water-shedding glass’.

One of the things I love most about the GoPro is the Quik App which offers super quick video creation featuring original music, some very good editing tools, great filters and very easy social sharing.

You cannot only use Quik to create videos from your GoPro content but also what you shoot using your phone.

You can change the camera settings for either a lineal horizon or the traditional curved GoPro look.

You just select the videos or photos you want to use, hit a quick video button and see what is created. More often than not, the best bits of your video are selected, but if they are not, you can go in and edit the clips to choose exactly what you want.

Some of the filters can be a little over the top in terms of colour saturation but there’s plenty to choose from to get the look you want.

If you sign up for a GoPro subscription, you can automatically upload your photos and footage to the cloud in full resolution.

A subscription will also give you access to premium editing tools in the app, guaranteed damaged camera replacement, $100 off up to three new GoPro cameras a year and up to 50% of accessories.

There are some great deals around if you are going down that path with one package starting at $529 with a year subscription.

The GoPro Hero 10 Black action camera captures highest photo resolution to date and feature a faster chip for speedy operation.

The GoPro is not perfect, with it still freezing on the odd occasion, but for what it does, it’s pretty incredible for the price.
