Looking for somewhere to go for a tasty cinnamon scroll? Here are five top spots to try from across SEQ.
Sprout Artisan Bakery, Fortitude Valley
From humble pop-up roots in an industrial suburb, this showstopping bakery has had a meteoric rise. Sprout Artisan Bakery, known for its 72-hour sourdough, delicate pastries and seriously good coffee, is a sleek cafe with an indulgent secret. That secret is their stunning morning bun or cinnamon scroll for uninitiated. Soft, golden layers of sourdough pastry are laced with cinnamon and brown sugar, then topped with a silky vanilla glaze that balances perfectly. For something extra decadent they often whip up specials like a peanut brittle and jam version. Pair it with a Reuben Hills flat white and a sunny seat outside, and you’ve got the ultimate slow morning.
76 James St, Fortitude Valley
Superthing West End
There’s no missing Superthing – a candy-coloured croissant temple, where the pastries are flaky, fun and as fabulous as the venue’s vibe. Here they’re known for all things bold and whimsical, from specials like bitter orange custard cruffins and matcha almond croissants. But they also ace the classics. Their cinnamon scroll is made from exceptional croissant dough, paving the way for those crisp, buttery layers, all rolled with cinnamon sugar and topped with a vanilla custard drizzle. The texture is outrageously good – crispy, chewy and tender in all the right places. Customers can also watch the pastry magic happen through a glass-walled kitchen.
215 Montague Rd, West End
Banneton Bakery, multiple locations
Banneton is one of those bakeries where you can expect a line down the street every weekend. Step into their Ashgrove, Camp Hill or Woolloongabba venues and you’ll discover an up-market, cosy bakery that truly knows its stuff. Me? I’m heading straight through that door for their cinnamon
scrolls. Not for the faint of sweet tooth, Banneton’s scrolls
are the perfect classic variety, best enjoyed a little warm so
the sticky vanilla glaze melts perfectly between each buttery, cinnamon-heavy layer. Oh, and good luck resisting the walls
of crusty sourdough and more-ish savoury pastries while you are at it.
Ashgrove, Camp Hill, Woolloongabba
Tome, Maroochydore
Aside from their jaw-dropping statement cake expertise, this stylish Maroochydore spot blends patisserie precision with big, nostalgic flavours. Their hidden talent though? Their sticky cinnamon scroll, which has been keeping locals coming back for more 11 years. It’s packed with warm spice and is unapologetically gooey in all the right ways. This one definitely leans into cinnamon bun territory. It’s a sweet, slow-start kind of treat – the sort you savour with strong coffee and sandy feet. If you lived in the area and hadn’t heard of this sweet little spot before Covid, their dedication to home-delivering these pick-me-up buns probably put them on your radar.
2/6 Beach Rd, Maroochydore
Cinnamon Bun Cafe, Tamborine Mountain
High up in the Gold Coast Hinterland in the quaint village of Tamborine Mountain lies the literal gold at the end of the rainbow for fans of the warm, gooey, spicy treat we are heralding here. The aptly named the Cinnamon Bun Cafe specialises in all things, you guessed it, cinnamon bun. Provincially simple, these doughy bundles of sticky goodness are perfectly balanced between the campfire-cosy spice of
the cinnamon blend and the not-so-sickly sweet glossy
glaze. Making a stop along the Long Rd even sweeter (if that’s even possible) is some of the specialty varieties like apple and cinnamon and Easter egg.
134 Long Rd, Tamborine Mountain.
