A beloved Nambour real estate and sports identity has been remembered for his cheeky and outgoing character after his battle with cancer.

Tributes have flowed for Terry Hinds, 81, who sadly passed away from prostate cancer in his Nambour home on June 14, 2022.

Much-loved by the Sunshine Coast sporting and real estate community since arriving to the region in 1974, Mr Hinds has left a lasting legacy with those who came in contact with the passionate and caring figure.

His daughter Toni Hinds said she had been struggling since her dad’s passing but had been overjoyed by the stories she’d heard about him since his death.

“Everyone just remembers him as a character who always supported the underdog,” Ms Hinds said.

“He was a person who said it like it was, and always spoke with a bit of cheek.”

Mr Hinds was born in 1940 in Collinsville, North Queensland and attended Townsville Grammar before meeting his beloved wife Ursula.

In his early years he won the 1964 premiership as the hooker for the Townsville Brothers Rugby League Club.

He moved to Brisbane in 1971 and worked with Trans Australia Airlines for a decade until he moved to Nambour in 1974 where he bought the Nambour Toy and Sports Store.

Throughout the years he became a dad to his daughter Ms Hinds and son Ian and would take them on camping trips to Fraser Island among other destinations.

Ms Hinds said her dad loved the outdoors and would relish in the chance to fish and crab with his family.

He was able to follow his love for sports after splitting his Toy and Sports store and expanding his businesses across the Sunshine Coast.

Mr Hinds was a passionate sport volunteer for decades after this, coaching the Nambour PCYC youth team and sold raffle tickets at the Royal George Hotel to raise money for a shaded stand for parents at local cricket games.

Ms Hinds said her dad held positions with the Nambour Golf Club, the Sunshine Coast Rugby League Judiciary and the Sunshine Coast Sportsmen Association.

The savvy businessmen then forayed into real estate in 1980 after helping begin an LJ Hooker in Nambour and went on to work for First National.

His daughter said Mr Hinds went out on his own in 2001 and created Terry Hinds Real Estate out of his Nambour home.

He would continue to work with his wife and daughter who worked in the family business, helping with the management and book work in the years before his death.

Ms Hinds said her dad was always full of “cheek and sarcasm” often telling his daughter she had arrived for the afternoon shift if she came in at 9.30am instead of 9am.

Since his death she said she’d seen the kindness of her father’s heart with a woman retelling her encounter with the late Nambour agent when she left a domestic violence situation 20 years ago.

The woman who was a nurse said Mr Hinds was the only real estate agent who would give her a rental as she had no rental history and had left the family home for her safety.

“He said that we were going to give this lady a go, because she deserved a break,” Ms Hinds said.

“Dad was always up for helping people.”

Mr Hinds was remembered as a loving husband to Ursula, wonderful father to Toni and Ian and devoted poppy to Tiahna and Levi.

His funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 23 at 1.30pm at Gregson & Weight in Nambour.

All were welcome with the service being live streamed for those unable to attend.
