Caloundra Indoor Sports Centre to reopen as Covid-19 vaccination hub

A Sunshine Coast vaccination hub which dished out 1400 Covid-19 jabs per day across a 10-day period is set to reopen.

A vaccination hub which handed out 1400 Covid-19 jabs per day across a 10-day blitz is set to reopen on the Sunshine Coast.

A Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service spokeswoman said planning was underway with council for the Caloundra Indoor Sports Centre to be used as a community vaccination hub in October.

Queensland Health data showed the centre was used from June 12-22 where 14,108 jabs were handed out.

The spokeswoman said it was a successful hub but did not say how many daily jabs would be administered when it reopened.

She said the centre was scheduled to open in October and run until December.

“Unfortunately, we were unable to hold the vaccination clinic for a longer period at that time due to the commitments of other groups using the space,” the spokeswoman said.

Queensland Health data shows more than 100,000 residents on the Sunshine Coast had received the jab.

The spokeswoman said of those, 44,035 were for their second dose.

Sunshine Coast Health’s Covid-19 vaccination lead Suzanne Metcalf thanked those who had come forward and rolled up their sleeves.

“We’re excited to be able to reinstate this service and further enhance access to the free Covid-19 vaccine for Sunshine Coast residents,” Ms Metcalf said.

“We’ll keep the community informed when this vaccination centre is due to reopen, but in the meantime all eligible residents should register now to be vaccinated.

“This gives you the opportunity to be vaccinated at one of our current vaccination locations, or at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium when appointments are made available.”

Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson encouraged all eligible residents to get the jab in bid to protect themselves and others in the community.
