The Pavilion Mooloolaba’s upcoming rooftop expansion.

A Sunshine Coast beachfront restaurant has announced it‘s preparing to build a $1.5m rooftop bar on top of its popular venue.

The Pavilion Mooloolaba along the Mooloolaba Esplanade plans to build and open a 364sq m rooftop bar and dining area by summer next year after opening to a buzz of customers late last year.

The Pavilion Mooloolaba co-founder Craig Morrison said he expected it to cost $1.5m and was happy to make this sizeable investment given it will be the first rooftop venue in the region with an ocean view.

“We’re excited to see Mooloolaba return to its former glory,” he said.

A development application for the Mediterranean-style venue’s rooftop extension, designed by Wylde Co, was submitted to Sunshine Coast Council for approval on November 30.

The subtropical extension will sit on top of the existing venue, mirror its current archways and earthy tones, and feature a bar, kitchen, large dining area, a spiral staircase and four booths overlooking the beach.

The concept, with cascading plants and garden beds dressing the exterior, will also feature a large glass cover.

Mr Morrison said its biggest attraction will be its “true” rooftop experience, given it will be an open-air space with a cool sea breeze.

He said this open design put the rooftop area at risk of having to close during wet weather but was worth it for a stellar experience during good weather.

“It’s all about the view,” he said.

He said the rooftop bar will specialise in hosting private functions like weddings and cater to interstate visitors and city folk looking for a unique venue instead of typically going to Noosa.

Mr Morrison said he and co-founder and savvy businessman Shane Hepburn wanted to build it because it was part of their vision and they were running out of space.

Mr Morrison said the extension will double their capacity from about 150 to 300 people.

Mr Morrison said the construction industry’s current crisis was a concern for his project but hoped that will have eased once they planned to begin building by early next year.
