After applying for countless criminology jobs a Sunshine Coast surfer decided to take matters into her own hands and pursue a childhood dream.

A talented young surfer has found out the hard way that crime doesn’t pay after ditching a criminology career to carve out a future with her own fashion label.

Olivia Reginato spent a year applying for jobs in criminology without luck before taking up a very different career path.

Ms Reginato recently launched Regular Threads, a completely handmade, sustainable fashion label that focuses on simple, elegant designs.

The dual degree holder in criminology and psychology said she decided to follow her passion instead of being disheartened by the job hunt.

“I've been taught by my mum and grandma how to sew, so I’ve been sewing my own clothes for a while now but it really became a hobby through Covid,” she said.

“So I decided to turn it into more than a hobby and it’s going really well.”

She said it was surreal to have the fashion label up and running.

“As a little girl I was always dreaming of being a fashion designer or having my own brand, but I never thought I’d be able to do it,” Ms Reginato said.

She said it was important for her to look out for the planet and hoped consumers would chose smaller, sustainable businesses over fast fashion brands.

“I’ve been mindful of sustainability because I know the fashion industry is one of the biggest contributors to landfill,” she said.

“I know small business won’t contribute anything in comparison to what big fashion brands do, but it’s always in the back of your mind.

“Because I make everything to order it helps me cut down on my waste I don’t make anything that is not going to be sold.”

Ms Reginato said she hoped to expand her brand to men’s fashion and would never compromise on practicality.

“I hate finding clothes that don’t have pockets or pockets that are too small to fit anything in, so all of my clothes, including the dresses have pockets that are able to fit a decent size phone or a little wallet,” she said.

Ms Reginato, who grew up in surf life saving before moving to surfing said Regular Threads enjoyed a rush of orders since launching in August and is expecting more orders to come leading into the Christmas period.

“I have a very good community around me, my friends, family and a very broad club culture, so the label has been received very well,” she said.
