A major expansion has been proposed for a retail hub servicing a growing community in the northern Sunshine Coast.

Plans have been submitted to the Sunshine Coast Council for an upgrade of the busy Peregian Springs Shopping Centre at Ridgeview Dr, Peregian Springs.

The proposal was lodged in April, 2022 by consultants on behalf of the landowner and applicant Dearmer Investments Pty Ltd, directed by Tinbeerwah’s Pamela Dearmer.

Currently comprised of a Coles supermarket and 16 specialty stores the key centre is set for a transformation with a 2000sq m expansion.

A new two and three-storey building is earmarked for the southern part of the site as well as a single-storey extension to the existing Coles supermarket.

The planned upgrade would be rolled out in two stages.

The first stage was proposed to be a 1616sq m construction of the retail and associated tenancies while the 412sq m expansion of the Coles outlet was set to be delivered in the second stage.

The new building proposed would have four stores on the ground floor for retail or food and drink outlets while level one was expected to suit medical suites or offices.

A gym was envisaged to take up level two.

Extra carparking would be provided as part of the development which would increase the centre to more than 7000sq m.

The proposal was impact assessable given it would take the total gross floor area above 5000sq m.

An economic needs assessment for the proposal forecast retail spend in the area was set to increase by almost $28m by June, 2037.

The supermarket expansion and additional tenancies were forecast to generate an extra $5.4m in turnover for the centre for the year ending June, 2025.

The report stated the existing Coles was already trading “well above industry benchmark levels” and the population growth in the surround area supported the expansion.

Council planners were currently considering the proposal which the community would be able to give feedback on as part of the approval process.
