Suncity Bowl site: Plans for unit complex lodged on Alexandra Headland alley

The countdown is on for Suncity Bowl, which stood strong at Alexandra Headland for four decades, as developers seek to strike a bumper deal for a major unit complex.

Residents furious about development

The future of an iconic Alexandra Headland bowling alley could be clear soon after a development application for a three-tower beachside unit complex was lodged with Sunshine Coast Council.

Project Urban, on behalf of Ultium Energy, lodged plans with council on Monday for 109 multiple dwelling and short-term accommodation units at 8 Mari Street, Alexandra Headland.

Suncity Bowl had been an institution on the Sunshine Coast for four decades after John Griffin built it on former swamp land in 1979.

Core Logic data showed Ultium Energy purchased the property for $5.7 million in March 2021.

An Australian Securities and Investments Commission search confirmed Ultium Energy is directed by Scott Juniper of Cube Developments.

The plans revealed the code assessable project sought to build three unit towers on the site and basement parking.

“The proposed development is identified as Harmony, with a total of 109 units across the three towers,” the plans read.

“The proposal maintains a medium-rise built form with a maximum height of 18 metres.”

The plans showed some of the onsite facilities proposed in the development included an indoor gym, two outdoor BBQ areas, a lagoon-style swimming pool and several rooftop facilities.

Mr Juniper was approached for comment.

Cube Developments development manager Daniel Ryan confirmed the company had purchased the site in December last year.

At the time, Mr Ryan said the sale was a “strategic play”.

The company is also behind a similar development, Beach Life Alex, which is one block away from Mari Street.

Mr Griffin, aged in his 70s, said he was past retirement age and that the stars aligned to sell.

“We got a good offer at the right time. We weren’t looking to sell but it coincided with a number of things,” Mr Griffin said in December 2020.

“It is a bit sad, but you realise it was always inevitable. So you get on with life.”
