A major residential care development has been proposed as part of the next phase of growth for a rapidly expanding southern Sunshine Coast waterfront estate.

Planning documents lodged with Sunshine Coast Council on June 30 reveal plans for a new six-storey, 150-bed residential care facility close to The Cove precinct in Pelican Waters.

The proposal, submitted on behalf of leading privately-owned aged care provider Rockpool Residential Aged Care, was being assessed under code by council planners.

Responding to the community and economic need for extra housing options for elderly in the area, the proposal was set to give residents the chance to “age in place” as their housing requirements shifted.

The 6110sq m site on Spitfire Banks Drive, Pelican Waters, was set to house a 150-bed facility spanning six storeys.

The ground floor would feature the entry foyer and reception as well as dining, cafe and hair salon facilities.

A theatre, function room and terrace, consulting rooms, dentist and wellness area would also be on the ground level, as well as admin areas, kitchen, laundry and servicing garage.

Each of the five upper floor levels would be made up of a 30-bed community, with 15 bed cottages at each wing.

Centralised dining, lounge, sitting and nursing stations would also feature, while two large “wanders decks” were proposed to the memory support units on level one.

The L-shaped design would deliver an outlook, natural light and air flow, while maximising views to the Glass House Mountains and ocean, with each room to boast a private ensuite.

The application was made to the council on behalf of Rockpool RAC Pty Ltd, which specialised in residential aged care, respite care and specialist memory support care.

“Rockpool RAC aim to assist people attain better health, wellbeing and lifestyle choices through residential aged care services,” the planning report states.

Large private development firm McNab, responsible for delivering several major projects on the Sunshine Coast, enjoyed a connection to Rockpool, having built the $25m Rockpool RAC facility in Morayfield.
