New date for Mooloolaba Triathlon revealed after Cyclone Alfred cancellation

A major Sunshine Coast sporting event cancelled as Tropical Cyclone Alfred looms has been rescheduled.

After the looming threat of Tropical Cyclone Alfred led to the cancellation of the major sporting event, new dates for the Mooloolaba Triathlon have been announced.

A Mooloolaba Triathlon team spokesperson said the event would take place on March 29-30, 2025.

“The team has been working with event stakeholders to secure a new date for this year’s Mooloolaba Triathlon and look forward to welcoming athletes and their supporters to the region at the end of March,” the spokesperson said.

“The event would like to thank athletes, stakeholders, partners and volunteers for their continued support of the Mooloolaba Triathlon.”

The triathlon was initially planned for this weekend but Tropical Cyclone Alfred wiped the event off the calendar.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli announced earlier this week the triathlon would be cancelled.

“The permits have been suspended and council officers are working with the organisers to find a suitable date to reschedule this event,” she said.

“We know this is incredibly disappointing for the participants, for the spectators, for our community more broadly.

“But of course the safety of our people here and all the participants who might seek to travel here is what is really important and so this difficult decision has been made because we need to keep everyone safe.

“We know that we are looking at destructive winds ahead and a storm surge. This will be combined with significant rainfall … this is going to be a significant event which will be impacting communities … this will be our whole region which needs to be taking this advice seriously.”
