SPORT has a big part to play not only in promotion of the Sunshine Coast but a career path for sportspeople.
Sunshine Coast Lightning netball coach Noelene Taurua showed the passion she has for the sport at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday morning.
Taurua, founding coach of the Lightning in the inaugural year of the Australian Netball League, said it was a privilege to play and train at the university.
Lightning, who won the championship in their first season, were the only regional team represented in the national competition.
"We were very lucky to win,'' Taurua said. "We had clear objectives to recruit a team capable of winning and to have strong community engagement.
"Our talent search for netballers showed we can provide a solid pathway to play at this level, and go on to be an Australian Diamond.
"You don't have to go to Brisbane or another capital city.''
Taurua was speaking at a coffee morning hosted by Lightning at the University of the Sunshine Coast Health and Sport Centre for Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce.
She said that having players from South Africa, New Zealand and England as well as Australia widened the catchment of support for the team.
"We are looking forward to the 2018 season.
"We are lucky to be tied to the Melbourne Storm and the expectation that comes with that.
"They were able to claim having won the NRL in their second year.
"We are proud to say we have got that off our back.
"With the facilities here (at the university) we can take our brand to another level.
"2017 was a great foundation year.
"As for 2018 - watch out, you ain't seen nothing yet.''
Pre-season for the 2018 netball competition starts on November 4 and the season begins at the end of the Commonwealth Games.
