Steven Miles and David Crisafulli discuss their Olympic stadium plan

Steven Miles said David Crisafulli’s comments on an Olympic stadium is a major blow for the AFL premiers, but will they be displaced if the LNP take the reins?

Reader's question on Olympic stadium

Premier Steven Miles has labelled LNP Leader David Crisafulli’s comments on the best 2032 Games stadium a major blow for the Lions.

After Mr Crisafulli criticised Labor’s plan to have the athletics at QSAC and pledged not to build a new stadium, the Premier called on his rival to “be honest” about his plans and claimed “he’s not telling Queenslanders he will build the Gabba’’.

Mr Miles said he had scrapped the Gabba option after feedback, including anger that it would deprive the premiership-winning local AFL team a home base next year.

“Well, what we need is an athletics stadium and our athletics facility is the most appropriate venue to build an athletics stadium,’’ he said in response to a reader question from Nick, of Gaythorne.

“I saw David Crisafulli now wants to revisit the Gabba proposal.

“Well, the problem for him is that Gabba proposal required demolition to begin in 2025, so is he seriously going to tell the AFL premiers that they can’t play in Brisbane next year?’’

When posed Nick’s question, “what do you believe is the best option for an Olympic stadium?’’, Mr Crisafulli doubled down on his plan for a 100-day review of Games venues.

He again did not reveal specifics, saying the best option should be “chosen by experts, backed by all levels of government, and one that makes sure that Queensland is going to be proud of the games’’.

“Again, a good option is one where the community can see that there’s a legacy play, not where one person has made a decision to do something temporarily in the wrong location (QSAC) that will be ripped down,” Mr Crisafulli said.

Reader question for Miles on Olympic stadium

“I know talking about restoring a process probably doesn’t make the sexiest of headlines.

“But after 1100 days of chaos and crisis, in 100 days we can restore the process and people’s pride in it.

“And part of that involves getting all levels of government back around the table, not making it a vanity project about a couple of people in the state government, making it about Queenslanders.’’
