What happens if I don’t vote?

By law, it is compulsory for eligible Australian citizens, aged 18 or older, to vote at Queensland state elections, council elections, and state referendums.

Failing to cast your vote will resulted in fine valued at $161.30 as of July 1 2024. The amount of the penalty unit is indexed annually under Penalties and Sentences Act 1992.

If you can’t make it to a polling booth, Queenslanders can apply online for the electoral commission website for a direct and secure postal vote.

How can I vote?

You can vote by: post, early, on election day, by telephone (eligible voters only) and via mobile polling (eligible voters only).

Postal vote: Applications are open now, with electors able to apply for a postal vote online at ecq.qld.gov.au/postal or by phoning ECQ’s call centre on 1300 881 665.

Early voting: Voters can visit one of the 200 early-voting centres – some locations are still being confirmed and further information about opening hours and final locations will be published prior to the election.

Election day: Voting will be available at more than 1300 polling booths across the state between 8am and 6pm on October 26.

Telephone vote: Telephone voting is a strictly-limited service available only to eligible electors including those who cannot vote without assistance because they have an impairment, have an insufficient level of literacy, cannot vote at a polling booth because of an impairment, are a special postal voter, or are a distance voter.
