Key policy at centre of LNP plan to tackle youth crime crisis

The LNP will roll out new laws to tackle youth crime within its first two months if it wins government in October.

‘Doesn’t have to be like this’: David Crisafulli ‘determined’ to stamp out youth crime in Qld

The LNP has vowed to roll out new laws to tackle the state’s youth crime crisis in its first two months in government should it win the election.

A change to the Youth Justice Act that removes detention as a last resort for juvenile offenders will be the party’s first order of business.

LNP leader David Crisafulli will today announce the Making Queensland Safer laws, which he says will be the party’s first priority.

“For more than three years, the LNP has been travelling the state, listening to Queenslanders about their priorities,” he said.

“The Making Queensland Safer laws are a priority for Queenslanders.

“Queenslanders want to feel safe in their homes and their businesses, they want an end to the cycle of crime that is terrorising their community.

“The reason we’re in this mess is fewer police and weak laws …

“The rights of crime victims must be put front and centre, and we must have consequences for actions by rewriting the Youth Justice Act.

“Only the LNP has the right priorities for Queensland’s future, including making our community safer.”

The LNP has also launched a major television and digital advertising campaign to spruik its policies.

The ads began on Sunday night and show Mr Crisafulli at his family farm in North Queensland before overlay footage of teens committing crimes is played.

“I grew up in North Queensland where we used to leave the door unlocked,” he says.

“I was married here. My daughters were born here. We felt safe.

“But that’s changed, right across Queensland.

“Break-ins, stolen cars, teens are running riot through our homes, our businesses, our lives.

“They’ve stolen the Queensland we love and the premier says not much can be done.

“It wasn’t like this before, and it doesn’t have to be now.”

Mr Crisafulli said the LNP’s plan would put victims’ rights first, put more police on the streets and create more programs for troubled youths.

“Strong laws will deliver consequences for actions,” he said.

“Those who need to be removed from the community will be.”
