Former LNP government minister Jann Stuckey has attacked her old party over fears that voluntary assisted dying laws could be overturned by the conservatives if they win the October 26 election.
Ms Stuckey, a tourism minister in the Newman government, who is battling recurrent pancreatic cancer, took to Facebook on Wednesday to vent after crossbench MPs revealed they would introduce plans to repeal or amend abortion laws.
VAD advocates such as Stuckey fear it could also be in the crosshairs of the Katter Australia Party, One Nation and LNP hardliners, with Opposition leader David Crisafulli refusing to say if he would deny party MPs a conscience vote on abortion.
“Crisafulli simply cannot make a captain’s call on this – already two MPs have gone public about overturning abortion laws. VAD will be next,” Ms Stuckey posted on Wednesday.
“As a former LNP MP, I advocated strongly to see these laws brought in so those of us with cancer that is deemed terminal can have the option of Voluntary Assisted Dying.
“We must stand up and fight to keep them. If you don’t support VAD, that’s up to you, but don’t deny a dying person their chance to die with dignity.”
Ms Stuckey said her successor in the southern Gold Coast seat of Currumbin, Laura Gerber, had voted against VAD laws.
“Ask your candidates at the state election their personal views and don’t let them weasel out of it – it’s a conscience vote!” she urged.
