Re-elected MPs share their view on LNP leadership race

Deb Frecklington has resigned as the LNP leader. Now, Toowoomba’s three LNP MPs have shared their view on what is happening.

Need for change in Queensland 'never been more paramount'

TOOWOOMBA’S LNP MPs have remained quiet on the future of the LNP leadership in Queensland.

Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington yesterday announced her intentions to stand down as leader at a party room meeting later this week, once all the results are known.

Ms Frecklington, who is the Member for Nanango and is based in Kingaroy, became leader of the party in 2017 after Tim Nicholls lost that election for the party.

Gold Coast-based Broadwater MP David Crisafulli has emerged as the most likely replacement for Ms Frecklington, though Everton MP Tim Mander, who is Ms Frecklington’s deputy, is also considered a potential leader.

The Chronicle understands Toowoomba South MP David Janetzki is considering a run for the deputy leadership.

Sources have told The Chronicle Mr Janetzki has been approached by some within the party to run for the position, as he is free from the stigma attached to LNP members that served in the Campbell Newman government.

Labor attacked both Tim Nicholls and Ms Frecklington at the 2017 and 2020 elections over their connections to the Newman Government.

Labor won both of those elections.

T he Chronicle contacted Mr Janetzki to ask him whether he was going to run for either the leader or deputy leader position, but he did not respond by deadline.

Toowoomba’s two other LNP MPs have also remained quiet on the subject of leadership, but neither are expected to run for leader or deputy.

“There will be no decision until all the seats are declared,” Condamine MP Pat Weir said on Sunday.

“It will be decided there in the party room as it always has been.”

Toowoomba North MP Trevor Watts also remained coy on his thoughts.

“At this point, let’s have a look at what happens as we go forward,” he said.

“The most important thing for me … is to get back to work on Monday morning, representing and fighting for the people of Toowoomba North.”
