Toowoomba North LNP MP Trevor Watts has committed to installing flashing school zones signs at several local schools if his party is elected to government after Saturday.

Mr Watts said the signs would be installed around Mater Dei Primary School and Highfields State Secondary College.

He said the new flashing school zone signs would be installed on Curzon St and O’Brien Rd which are two of the busiest thoroughfares in Toowoomba and Highfields, especially during peak hour.

“These new signs will greatly improve the safety of students, parents and the wider school community,” Mr Watts said.

“It will also give motorists greater visibility and awareness as they travel through these areas during school pick-up and drop-off periods.”

Mr Watts said flashing school zone signs were particularly important around East Toowoomba.

“We’ve had a couple of foggy days this week where the fog was thick,” he said.

“When the fog is thick and people are travelling fast, they might not realise they’re in a school zone, little kids might not be seen as easily, and all of a sudden we have a tragedy.

“Flashing lights really just grab drivers’ attention and cut through the fog.”

Mr Watts said a number of parents at Mater Dei had contacted him about the need for the lights.
