A re-elected Labor Government would commit $8 million across Darling Downs schools to help students get the skills they need to build a career close to home.

The funding is part of a $45 million skills boost to build and upgrade schools facilities and support Queensland’s economic recovery, which Labor says will create 150 jobs.

Speaking from Toowoomba yesterday, Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the investment would ensure schools across the Darling Downs were well equipped to help students maximise future opportunities.

“Only a Queensland Labor Government will deliver the skills our regions need to prepare students for jobs in our recovering economy,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“This will also support local construction jobs, helping our tradies and building suppliers at this crucial time.”

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Local Schools Local Jobs initiative would target the jobs of the future so students can seamlessly access at-school training for industries relevant to their regions.

“This initiative is an important part of Queensland’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan,” she said.

“I want to make sure that our young people have the skills needed for rewarding careers in these emerging industries.

“Our $45 million investment in schools will upgrade existing facilities and build new industry linked training infrastructure.

“This will deliver improved training experiences across a multitude of traditional and new industries.”

There is funding for several schools in the Darling Downs, including Chinchilla State High School and Tara Shire State College, which will receive funding for engineering annexes to support training opportunities in the mining, gas and electrical industries.

$1.4 million has been allocated to Clifton State High for upgrades to its horse tables and Dalby State High would receive $2.5 million for upgrades to the rural and industrial manufacturing training facilities.
