CRICKET: One of the biggest days on the Stanthorpe sporting calendar returned at the weekend and the annual cricket fundraiser once again proved itself an enduring hit.
A strong roll-up turned out for Super 8s on Australia Day, with a dozen teams partaking.
"It all went well. I think we ended up with 12 teams, which we thought was a pretty good turnout,” Stanthorpe Cricket Association president Luke Brady said.
Eight men's teams were involved, while four took part in the mixed competition.
"Those numbers are pretty much normal,” Brady said.
Mighty Ducks took out the mixed competition while a contingent from Kirra Pines won the men's event.
"The Mighty Ducks were a team of some 12- and 11-year-old boys,” Brady said.
"Kirra Pines won the men's but it was close.
"There's a point system in the scoring. They only just won by one or two points, and then someone else was only one or two behind second spot.”
With Stanthorpe Cricket reliant on raising its own funds to keep ticking over, Brady said the day was an important one.
"I'd say it's pretty similar to other years in terms of what we raised.
"We had that one big year two years ago but it was pretty standard this time.
"The day should have done what it's there for.”
Brady thanked the event's major sponsor, the Queensland Country Credit Union.
Cricket returns to normal this weekend with regular fixtures on Saturday.
On Sunday, the Stanthorpe representative side welcomes Central Downs to town for the final of the Mitchell Shield competition.
