A former Cherbourg Regional Council worker and father of three has avoided actual jail time after being convicted of a series of small-time drug deals worth several hundred dollars.
Norman Eric John Wragge, 34, was caught by police when they seized his phone during a search of his home, published sentencing remarks from his April appearance at Kingaroy District Court said.
The court was told Wragge made five deals of methamphetamine between January 26 and February 23, 2024.
They included one of 0.2g for $100, and four others of 0.1g for $50.
Four of the deals were made to the same person and as Wragge was not a drug user himself his motivation “must have been a financial one”, the court was told.
Judge Vicki Loury said Wragge’s criminal history “tends to reveal” he had “a drinking problem over a number of years” but noted his last conviction, for public nuisance, was in January 2022.
Wragge’s “good work history” was noted too including stints as a farmhand, with the Cherbourg council, and more recently as a labourer at an emu farm.
The court was told Wragge was a regular fixture with the Cherbourg Hornets rugby league club.
He pleaded guilty to five counts of supplying a dangerous drug, and one count of possessing a phone in connection with those offences.
He was sentenced to one year’s jail, wholly suspended for two years.
