A Murgon man who robbed a woman as she walked across a bridge came undone when police cornered him on a train. Then they noticed him fidgeting with his undies.

A Murgon teenager was confronted by police after robbing a woman in Brisbane, which revealed a knife in his bag and illegal drugs stashed in his underwear.

Bronson Charles Aubrey, 18, pleaded guilty to one charge of common assault, one charge of possessing a knife in a public place, one charge of stealing and one charge of possessing dangerous drugs when he faced Murgon Magistrate’s Court.

Police prosecutor Lisa Manns said Aubrey was walking along the Queen Victoria Bridge in Brisbane on March 11, 2023 at 9.21pm when he grabbed the bag of a woman walking in front of him.

“He grabbed onto her handbag and stole her Apple iPad and stylus,” Sergeant Manns said.

“Police were alerted and Aubrey was found on the train as police made arrangements for the trains to be halted,” she said.

“When police searched him they located the iPad, stylus and a knife.”

The court heard police noticed Aubrey fidgeting with his underwear, before discovering 2.4 grams of cannabis hidden in his underwear.

Defence lawyer Sjaana Stephens said Aubrey was pulled into an undesirable friendship group while living in Brisbane and looking for work.

“He had the cannabis for personal use,” Ms Stephens said.

“He has worked for Cherbourg council previously and has two children,” she said.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair said Aubrey’s offending was serious.

‘If you can’t afford something, you shouldn’t have it,” Mr Sinclair said.

Aubrey was sentenced to 12 months probation and will be required to attend counselling sessions.

No convictions were recorded.
