Alexander Georgetown: Man in court after chasing down, bashing partner with curtain rod

‘I’m going to bash and kill your family’: A South Burnett man has faced court after he chased down his partner and struck her several times, with the horrifying assault taking place while a young child was in the next room.

Australia's domestic violence crisis

A South Burnett man who chased down his terrified girlfriend and beat her with a curtain rod in a horrifying assault has narrowly avoided a stint behind bars.

Kingaroy Magistrates Court heard that a heated argument broke out between Alexander Georgetown, 19, and his girlfriend while they were walking home from a party in Cherbourg earlier this month.

Police prosecutor Barry Stevens said the conflict escalated when Georgetown told the woman he was going to “bash and kill her family”, with the South Burnett man then grabbing a curtain rod and jabbing it into his victim’s hip and ankle.

The woman yelled out to her sister, who was also in the house at the time, and asked her to call the police.

Georgetown fled from the property only to return in the early hours of the next morning, forcing his way back inside the house and demanding the victim hand over his keycard, despite the woman telling him she did not have it.

The Kingaroy court heard Georgetown again seized the curtain rod and held it over his head, threatening to strike the woman again, prompting his victim to run into the kitchen and pick up a knife to defend herself.

Georgetown chased the woman into the next room and repeatedly hit her on the right side of her body with the weapon, only stopping when she warned him police were on their way to the house.

Sergeant Stevens said a seven-year-old child was sleeping in the next room during the violent attack.

Georgetown lashed out a final time as he was leaving the property, using the rod to smash holes in the door and living room wall.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair warned Georgetown that the level of violence inflicted could have resulted in jail time, though wanted to give the South Burnett man a chance at rehabilitation given his young age.

Georgetown pleaded guilty to one count each of unlawful assault, unlawful assault occasioning bodily harm with a dangerous instrument, and wilful damage.

He was placed on probation for two years and no conviction was recorded.
