Lesson not to forget: Officers’ key message for graduates

THEIR time at school might be over, but the learning doesn’t stop — particularly when it comes to road safety.

Emergency service workers gave Murgon State High School’s graduating Year 12s a sobering lesson about the potential consequences of their actions while driving.

Students watched on as Queensland Fire and Rescue workers demonstrated how they used the jaws of life to free a motorist from a crumpled car.

Ambulance officers then took over to show what their role on the scene of an accident involved, and shared information about baisc first aid.

Police officers Senior Constable Danielle Gordon and Constable Cameron Maddock spoke to the class about the fatal five: speeding, driving while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, not wearing a seat belt, driving while fatigued and driving while distracted, especially when using mobile phones and relevant devices.

The officers also spoke to the students about their responsibility to themselves, the passengers in their vehicle and members of the community while they were behind the wheel and explained the possible legal outcomes and other consequences of their actions.

Students got the chance to test out QFES equipment, such as the jaws of life, and had a look through the fire truck and the ambulance.
