Drought-hit communities win at Nanango and Kilcoy

NANANGO Race Club was one of eight tracks to host a drought fundraising meet at the weekend as part of the 1 for the Bush campagin.
The crowd at Kilcoy races also did their part to ensure drought-affected families got the support they needed.
The Queensland racing industry will donate $52,600 to the QCWA’s Public Rural Crisis Fund after Racing Queensland’s 1 for the Bush weekend.
Racing Queensland pledged $1000 for every runner carrying the number one saddlecloth that won a race on Saturday and Sunday.
Across the three codes, the number one triumphed on 10 occasions — including eight thoroughbreds, a greyhound and a harness winner.
Winners were found at Nanango, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Barcaldine, Innisfail, Goondiwindi and Albion Park.
Racing Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the campaign was a success.
“The funds raised will make a tangible difference to the many communities presently being impacted by the drought,” Mr Hinchliffe said.
“Racing plays an important role across Queensland’s communities and I applaud the industry for its willingness to raise funds for such an important initiative.”
The nation’s biggest betting operators, Tabcorp, Ladbrokes, Sportsbet and BetEasy, agreed to match Racing Queensland’s contribution, dollar for dollar.
This ensured a $5000 windfall every time the number one saluted across the state.
A number of racing clubs also supported the campaign — the Kilcoy Race Club and Kilcoy Diggers provided $800 apiece from their on-course fundraising efforts.
Racing Queensland chairman Steve Wilson said the response was heartening.
“Thanks to their collective support, $52,600 will now be donated to the QCWA, who will ensure that a great deal of good will be delivered to some of our most vulnerable Queenslanders,” Mr Wilson said.
“Our thoughts remain with those facing adversity and we express our hope that rainfall will soon bring an end to the terrible conditions many are enduring.”
