Former One Nation candidate Douglas Grant has thrown his hat into the ring and will be up against the former Labor member Linda Little for the Division 2 seat in the South Burnett Regional Council elections.

Mr Grant ran for the seat of Nanango as a member of One Nation in the 2017 Queensland state election, but was unsuccessful against Deb Frecklington.

Mr Grant and Ms Little have stated they are no longer affiliated with any political party.

The 69-year-old said he and his wife moved to Blackbutt in 2016 and built a house after they realised “the South Burnett was a wonderful place to live.”

Although retired from his work as a security consultant, Mr Grant is still called as an expert witness in criminal and civil cases that involve video evidence.

He has also worked with councils across Queensland, including the South Burnett, in assisting federal government grants for CCTV installations.

Mr Grant said he was running for Division 2 so there would be “at least one voice that would ring true”.

He said when he was running in the state election, many people came to him with issues that were being ignored by the council.

“The greater complaints were the council’s neglect to road repair and increasing rates,” he said.

“If council was run effectively, as a non-profit business in regards to expenditures, in my opinion, it would reduce the need for ever rising rates.

“There is work to be done in many areas notwithstanding, in the maintaining and assisting of local business.”

Mr Grant said he has also been watching the council chamber meetings and said his first impression was there was “a great divide” among the group.

“There was also too much aggression on display for all to see,” he said.

Mr Grant said council members should be “level-headed” and “reasonable representatives of their division.”

“No ego or any other motivation should be present in a sitting councillor, in my opinion.

“I am hoping there will be others with the same mindset for the March 2024 election,” he said.

The South Burnett Regional Council elections will be held on March 16, 2024.
