CONSTRUCTION for additional overtaking lanes on the New England Highway between Yarraman and Toowoomba has started.
The $7 million project, expected to be finished by February next year, will support 22 jobs.
Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the overtaking lanes would improve traffic flow and safety for motorists.
"The additional overtaking lanes will be built at two locations along the highway, providing motorist multiple opportunities to overtake safely," Mr Bailey said.
"There will be a new overtaking lane about 1.3 kilometres in length northbound and southbound.
"The Oakey-Cooyar Road intersection upgrade will also be incorporated into these works."
Mr Bailey said the works would include the extension or replacement of existing drainage structures, and alterations to private entrances affected by the overtaking lanes.
"We ask motorists to be patient while these important works are taking place," he said.
"Reduced speed limits, directional signage and traffic control will be in place during the works to guide drivers along the highway.
"Motorists should obey directional signage and take care while travelling through the area."
