IT MAY still be winter, but Yarraman residents are enjoying scoops of ice cream following the opening of new business Pink Flamingo.

It is a new venture for Jane and Frank Hodgkinson who have been enjoying the chance to bring a smile to people's faces since opening their doors for the first time four weeks ago.

"It is a little bit of lightness in the middle of the drought and a bit of fun,” Mrs Hodgkinson said.

"Some people say that they like having ice cream in winter and our area outside that is bathed in sunlight, so it's a nice place to have a coffee and for the kids.”

A white chocolate raspberry ice cream in Maleny inspired the couple to open an ice cream store, and they bought the post office building last year.

They now serve the Maleny ice cream alongside soft drinks from Crows Nest and coffee made from Kilcoy beans. They also serve dairy free, gluten free and vegan-friendly options.

The couple has been overwhelmed by the support from Yarraman residents and the business community since their opening.

As well as sourcing products locally, Mrs Hodgkinson is proud to be able to give junior employees their first taste of the hospitality business.

"It is a progression for young people to learn what is expected of them in the workplace and I what they should expect of me in the workplace,” she said.

Mrs Hodgkinson said she enjoyed decorating the the ice cream shop to fit its name.

"I felt that we needed a bit of flamboyance and fun and we could all do with a little bit of silliness,” she said.

The shop is open from 9am-5.30pm on Friday, and on Saturday and Sunday from 9am-4.30pm.
