A part of the famous Sky Deck at The Star Brisbane casino has been closed off after reports of cracks in one of the glass panels.
A Reddit post on Saturday grabbed eyeballs after a user mathieu_au shared the images of Sky Deck’s glass walkway being shut down by security after huge cracks appeared on one of the glass panels.
The post, captioned “Shut by security as a huge crack has appeared,” quickly gained traction online.
A spokesperson from The Star confirmed the incident and said the platform was placed under maintenance.
“We have isolated a section of the Sky Deck viewing platform for a maintenance and safety appraisal,” she said.
Within hours the Reddit post had attracted more than 165 comments, some speculating whether this could mark the beginning of a permanent closure, while others took a more tongue-in-cheek approach.
“It’ll become one of those things that just never reopens,” one user wrote.
“Seeing that and my extreme fear of heights means I’m never gonna step on that glass ever,” another added.
“I’ll happily stand back a few metres and enjoy the view from there, thank you,” another replied.
Others joked about the construction quality, with comments like “Temu glass’ll do that …” and “Final Destination: Aussie edition.”
Located on level 23 of the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development, the Sky Deck is positioned 100m above street level and opened to the public in August 2024.
The 250m-long rooftop structure connects three buildings across William Street and includes dining areas, a bar, an event space and a viewing platform. It is open year-round and designed to accommodate up to 1500 visitors.
The Sky Deck was constructed in three parts over several months. The second bridge section was lifted into place in March 2023, and the final piece was installed in July 2023.
The full structure – about 725 tonnes of Australian steel – was built as part of the $3.6 billion Queen’s Wharf project led by The Star Entertainment Group and its consortium partners.
