CELEBRATING literacy and the joy of stories was at the heart of Book Week - along with the bright costumes, which brought their beloved characters to life.

Roma schools joined in on the fun on Friday and, for the youngest children around town, Goodstart Early Learning got in to the spirit of book week, highlighting the importance of reading to kids in their first five years.

"Not only is Book Week a nation-wide opportunity to celebrate language and literacy for children, but we also enjoy engaging in the fun with our kids and their families,” centre director Tabatha Lippert said.

"Anything to promote reading and the First Five Forever is what we are all about.

"From birth to five is the most optimal opportunity for language to develop, and being in early childhood and having the children with us, we optimise every minute we can to speak and read stories.

"It's all about having conversations and increasing their vocab.”

At Goodstart, Book Week festivities culminated with a story beloved by students and their teachers, Alpacas with Maracas.

"That was the Simultaneous Story for the year,” Ms Lippert said.

"Once a year they bring out a book which early learning centres, libraries and schools read on National Simultaneous Storytime day at a certain time of day, which is usually 11am.

"Alpacas with Maracas was that story this year, and the children remembered it and really enjoyed engaging with it too, so we brought it out again for book week.”
