POLOCROSSE: The season may be coming to a close but the action has just begun in Roma.
Thirty teams from across Queensland are set to arrive in Roma for the club's multi-horse carnival this weekend - the last before the Queensland State Championships - and the home teams are determined to hold their own after successful trips away this year.
"We are excited to bring it back to the home ground,” Roma carnival secretary Katie Connolly said.
"Our A-grade team won the carnival here at home last year, so it will be good to see if they can back it up again this year.
"We also have a full team of juniors who have been playing together pretty consistently and actually won their A-grade game at the Chinchilla competition last weekend.”
The team of up-and-comers are quickly becoming the pride of the Maranoa side, as they continue to represent their club across the west.
"The youngest is about 14 and the oldest 16,” Connolly said.
"There's a group of six boys on that team who have come a long way with their skills over the past two years and are just a great bunch of kids. "We do get a lot of good feedback that they have quite good sportsmanship too, so we are pretty proud of them.”
To round out their regular season, Roma Polocrosse is welcoming one and all to the home carnival by offering free entry for spectators.
"There's no gate fee for the carnival, so people are more than welcome to stop by if they want to have a look,” Connolly said.
"Polocrosse is an interesting sport to watch, particularly for people who haven't seen it before.”
Games begin Saturday, 8am.
