A 39-year-old woman who spent a week in custody after assaulting a man with a cricket bat has faced court.
Tamasine Therese Ryan pleaded guilty in Roma Magistrates Court to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed, carrying a knife and possessing utensils associated with the use of illicit drugs.
Police prosecutions said Ryan approached the victim, who suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, in his own home and assaulted him, which resulted in a red mark and physical discomfort.
During the attack, the court was told the mother-of-four called the victim a dog, swung a cricket bat at him twice and then hit the front screen door.
Ryan went back to the man’s home two-and-a-half hours later where she kicked the door, knocked on one of the windows and destroyed several succulents in the front garden bed as she yelled abuse.
The court was told the victim said this was a trigger event for his PTSD and he was having trouble breathing afterwards.
Police tracked down Ryan and when they discovered she was carrying a knife, she was immediately taken into custody. Then, they performed a search at her house where they found a needle and a syringe.
Defence lawyer Leslee Reed told the court her client was using ice at the time of the assault and was remorseful of her actions.
“She wanted her TV returned for a number of weeks from the aggrieved,” she said.
“She’s admitted that she’s always carried a knife with her in public for protection.”
Ms Reed said Ryan has seen her local doctor about her drug use and is on a program to resolve it, and also suffers from PTSD as a result from previous domestically violent relationships.
Magistrate Shane Elliott said this is “very serious offending” and drugs impacted her ability to make decisions.
“They (drugs) do not assist you, all they do is cause you not to think in a rational manner,” he said.
“If the injury had been more serious, if you had broken bones you’d be looking at two to three years (jail).”
Ryan was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment to be served by way of an intensive correction order, which includes a mix of probation and community service.
