A Roma woman has copped a hefty fine and been banned from all licensed premises in the region for three months after a night of brawling at a local pub.
On March 5, Madison Alexandra Langley pleaded guilty in Roma Magistrates Court to public nuisance in a licensed premises and wilful damage.
The court was told the charges stemmed from her antics at the Commonwealth Hotel in Roma on January 27, which were described by a magistrate as “abhorrent”.
Langley’s solicitor, Leslie Reid, told the court Langley had been drinking at the Commonwealth Hotel, where she’d had about six vodka and Pepsi Max to drink.
Ms Reid said the 23-year-old conceded she was intoxicated.
Police prosecutor Ellysha Geddes said at about midnight, Langley was caught on CCTV throwing a drink into the back of a person as they walked past.
The court was told Langley then tried to hide from them on the premises, but was later confronted by the person in the beer garden of the Commonwealth Hotel.
A physical altercation ensued, with Langley pushing the other person, before the two began pulling at each other’s hair and fell to the floor.
Venue security separated the pair, but the court was told Langley escalated the incident when she jumped over the beer garden fence, and instigated another fight on the driveway of the premises.
Langley was pulled away again by venue security, and brought to the inside bar area of the hotel.
While inside, Ms Geddes said Langley only did more harm.
“(She) was caught on CCTV pulling violently on the front sliding doors until both doors came off the tracks, nearly falling onto a security guard,” Ms Geddes said.
Police were called to the incident at approximately 12.34am. While police were speaking with people in the area, yet another altercation involving Langley occurred.
This time, Langley kicked the other, before they both fell to the ground wrestling each other and again pulling at each other’s hair.
Finally, the parties were removed from the premises without further incident.
Ms Geddes said Langley had no criminal history, but did ask the magistrate to approve an application for a banning notice, which cited another infringement of a similar nature against Langley in 2022.
Ms Geddes also said the circumstances of the offending make the matter particularly concerning.
“Due to the serious nature of the prolonged engagement in anti-social behaviour, the charge is before the court as opposed to being a ticket,” Ms Geddes said.
Ms Reid told the court Langley was employed in Roma as an aged care worker.
Ms Reid asked magistrate Michael Wood to not record Langley’s conviction, given her young age and that it might affect her employment.
Ms Reid also told the court that Langley was remorseful for her actions.
Mr Wood did not record Langley’s conviction, but fined the 23-year-old $1000, and banned her from all licensed premises in Roma until June 5.
“I consider the behaviour here to be quite abhorrent,” Mr Wood said.
“You pose an unacceptable risk to the good order of licensed premises.”
