A woman who breached her parole and was locked up after entering a supermarket she was banned from has appeared in court via video link from custody.

Debbie Jean Thompson pleaded guilty in Roma Magistrates Court to one count of trespassing.

Police prosecutor Mathew Donnelly said on June 12 Thompson was spotted by Woolworths Roma staff inside the store and they immediately contacted police.

Two days later, Roma police cautioned Thomspon that she was charged with trespass and as a result had activated her parole suspension.

During a police interview she admitted it was a misunderstanding on her part.

“She made admissions she believed the ban was three months and was now free to attend,” Mr Donnelly said.

“She was placed on parole, this office activated a parole suspension.”

Magistrate Shane Elliott said he acknowledged this was a misunderstanding on Thompson’s part and advised she can make a show cause.

“I’ve taken into account you’ve obviously been in custody for three days and your parole was suspended as a consequence of committing this offence,” the magistrate said.

“I certainly accept that you misunderstood that notice and obviously its had some significant consequences for you.”

Thomspon was convicted and not further punished.

A conviction was recorded.
