A Roma man will spend Christmas behind bars after he brutalised another man in a jealous rage.
Brodie Robert Althaus was marched out of the Roma Magistrates Court in handcuffs on October 29, after he pleaded guilty to one charge of assaults occasioning bodily harm.
He was sentenced to serve three months in prison, then 18 months under the watchful eye of probation and parole after that.
Police prosecutor Ellysha Geddes told the court that on August 28, Althaus showed up to another man’s house, suspecting he was sleeping with his girlfriend.
Sergeant Geddes said Althaus confronted the man and became increasingly enraged when the man denied the accusations.
Eventually, Althaus turned to violence, punching him twice in the head with a closed fist, then as he was sitting in a chair, Althaus punched him in the head 10 times.
Then, as the man continued to deny he was sleeping with Althaus’ girlfriend, Sergeant Geddes said Althaus told the victim he would take him for a ride.
Sergeant Geddes said the victim feared for his life at that point, believing Althaus was going to kill him and try to dispose of his body.
Althaus left the property when the victim’s partner woke up, and the victim was rushed to hospital by paramedics.
The man was bleeding from his ear, had lacerations across his face, and severe bruising.
Althaus was represented by duty lawyer Leslie Reid, who said Althaus acknowledged he had an anger management problem, but has not yet done anything by way of addressing it.
Magistrate Aaron Simpson said the man’s history of violent offending was of particular concern.
Althaus has previously been convicted of offences including public nuisance and domestic violence offences, which were violent offences.
A look of resignation crossed Althaus’ face as Mr Simpson denounced the circumstances of the offending and that Althaus had taken little to no steps towards personal reform after the abhorrent incident.
