AS The Last Post sounds at dawn services throughout the nation this week, families around the southwest will think fondly of their loved ones who have done themselves and their country proud.

Among the men and women who have joined the army, air force and navy, many have travelled on operations to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Originally from St George, Ken Roberts is a serving Warrant Officer 1 and brother to a proud Karen Beardmore.

"He enlisted April 15, 1986, and is still serving,” Ms Beardmore said.

"His operations include Tanager and Warden East in Timor, Slipper in Afghanistan and Okra, Iraq.

"He is a brother to myself and David, the eldest son of Luke and Jan, husband to Gill and father of Rebekah, Luke and Andrew.”

The Balonne Beacon, Western Star, and Western Times made a call for the stories of the servicemen and women from our regions, with those contributed featuring in our below gallery.
