MOTORISTS are being urged to plan their trips across the southwest after the closure of Bollon's only fuel station on Sunday.

An alert was sent out on Monday that the town's only fuel station at Deb's Cafe closed on June 30, with fears drivers could be left stranded along the 295km stretch on the Balonne Hwy between bowsers at Cunnamulla and St George.

The owners of Deb's Cafe announced on May 27 that their fuel service would be closed from July onwards.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, and we would like to thank our valued customers for their continued support,” they said. "Swap n Go gas bottles and Delkor batteries will be available at the cafe after this date.”

Balonne Shire Council notified residents to plan ahead any journeys on the three-hour drive between the two rural centres.

RACQ spokeswoman Lucinda Ross told the Balonne Beacon it was a timely reminder for motorists to plan their journey.

"Regardless of where you're travelling from and where you're heading to throughout Queensland, it's always so important to plan your journey,” she said.

If you're bound for the Balonne Highway, we'd encourage you to factor in a fuel stop at either St George or Cunnamulla.”

"When there are substantial distances between servos, we call on governments to step in and install driver information signage to save motorists from being caught out, particularly in locations where traffic volumes are low and mobile reception may be poor.”
