New uni facility coming to Roma, but council votes against branding

Maranoa's first country university is fast approaching, and they recently requested council to allow them to temporarily brand a council-owned building at no expense to ratepayers.

Cr Joh Hancock said she didn't see a reason not to support it, stating people will clearly be able to see where the university is.

However, the motion was shut down by the majority of councillors.

Community celebrates life of Roma nurse killed in crash

This week, the Maranoa community mourned over the loss of a young local woman who tragically passed away in single vehicle crash on the Warrego Highway.

Roma man convicted of choking ex-partner case delayed by a year

Only twice a year, Roma District Court matters are held, and, in this sitting, Judge Michael Bryne QC was not satisfied with the one defendant's barrister for seeking an adjournment until November.

The man will be held in custody for about 11 months before his case his heard.

Maranoa council applies for $300k funding for upgraded cycleway

Councillors unanimously agreed to apply for funding to achieve the Queensland government's vision of 'more cycling, more often' and if successful, will put $300,000 towards a cycleway upgrade in Roma.

In more council news, the ever-widening divide between Maranoa councillors overdue diligence and lack of communication was described as "another sad indictment of the current council" during a vote on who would represent the organisation at several southwest focus groups.

Police identify alleged offender who ran down an emu

In a world where most people share absolutely anything and everything on social media - it has not ended so great for one Roma teenager who allegedly filmed himself running over an emu.

After the video was shared to the RSPCA, detectives from the Roma Criminal Investigation Branch made inquiries with the 16-year-old boy who shared the video to TikTok of himself running down an animal found on our coat of arms.

Roma police allege an Injune man who was accompanied by two other people, assaulted a young Roma bar worker at a licenced venue.

Roma crime wave sparks calls for Neighbourhood Watch

Roma residents fed up with what they believe is a spike in house and car break-ins and an increase in other criminal behaviour are pushing for a Neighbourhood Watch community policing scheme.

This follows after police reinforcements were called to Roma to assist with a crime spree which saw more than a dozen homes broken into in less than a week.
