LOCAL contractors have the chance to be part of the $5.95 million student nurse accommodation precinct at the new Roma Hospital, with more than 17 jobs up for grabs.
With the new $70 million Roma Hospital under construction, the Queensland Government has invited building contractors to submit expressions of interest to develop the project.
Maranoa mayor Tyson Golder said he encouraged local contractors to apply.
"If the government wants best value for money, local is the best way to go, locals will be there after the project finishes and they always give the price the first time, no variations," Cr Golder said.
"But with local procurement you've got to be confident that it is not just an exercise, so I would encourage everyone to have some discussion as local businesses and find out what the need is and if it is worthwhile."
The modern precinct, located 150m from the hospital, will be built on an 8000sq m site within the Roma Priority Development Area.
The precinct will feature elevated urban-style pavilions, each with five bedrooms and private ensuites, a communal kitchen and dining area, laundry, recreation and study areas, and a shipping container pool.
The pavilions and amenities will be connected by a boardwalk around a landscaped courtyard.
Minister for State Development and Infrastructure Cameron Dick said the project - a first for the hospital and the town - offered the opportunity to create more jobs in Roma.
"This work will provide a real boost for tradies and trade suppliers in the region," Mr Dick said.
"I encourage all experienced local contractors to get involved in this exciting project."
Following the EOI process, up to five suppliers will be shortlisted for an invitation to offer.
It's anticipated the successful contractor will be appointed by the end of the year.
