A much-loved piece of play equipment has been damaged by fire and will be closed to kids through Christmas.
The alleged vandals set fire to the Wyatt’s Wonder Web at Kershaw Gardens in the early hours of this morning, a Queensland Fire Department crew arriving the incident around 5.40am.
The fire affected a shade cloth and was smouldering when firefighters arrived.
They left the scene in the hands of Rockhampton Regional Council around 6.15am.
A Queensland Police Service spokesman said officers arrived around 6.10am.
No injuries were reported at the scene, and investigations are ongoing.
Rockhampton Regional Council Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford expressed her frustration and disappointment at the damage which is believed to be a deliberate act of vandalism.
“This is a devastating blow to our beloved Kershaw Gardens centrepiece and our community, particularly at this time of year when families are enjoying our parks during the holidays,” Cr Rutherford said.
“It is shameful acts like this that come at a significant cost, not to mention the disappointment for children and families who appreciate and look forward to using the beautiful spaces we create.”
Wyatt’s Wonder Web is expected to be closed until a safety assessment can be undertaken in the New Year.
Closures are in place at the site of the fire – however, the remainder of the playground remains open for families and children to enjoy.
Council is urging anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
