Emmaus skipper Baylee Meilland has made a clear statement of intent to the rest of the Dolphins Cup.

The inspirational skipper put his troops on his back and went charging through the teeth of rivals Cathedral College in an outstanding opening round performance.

The representative forward was critical to his teams go forward, but also their relentless defensive display, as they blew past The Cathedral College ??-??.

Exciting fullback Seth Carpenter scored a double and set up another while halfback Isaac Walker showed plnety of intent when he had ball in hand, including bouncing off tackles to score the side’s opener.

But chalk the win up to the school’s skipper who led from the front with an unrelenting enthusiasm and hunger for the contest.

Hooker Zac Bateman dove across for The Cathedral College’s only try of the contest midway through the first half, and the Rockhampton side refused to die wondering in a seesawing second half.

The Cathedral College were rewarded for their efforts late when backrower Jack Biles crashed across the stripe to reduce the final deficit.

He is the wrecking ball forward ready to turn the Dolphins Cup on its head.

Meet Emmaus College emerging backrower Josh Nilon.

The backrower will be a key addition to the Emmaus College opens team this season, as they aim to kick start the Dolphins Cup on the front foot against arch rivals The Cathedral College.

It is one of the most anticipated clashes on the Queensland schoolboys rugby league calendar, and will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV on Tuesday.

The two schools will clash in a Dolphins Challenge (Year 10) curtain-raiser at 4.30pm, before the Dolphins Cup clash kicks off at 5.30pm.

Nilon has made the big step up from the College’s Dolphins Challenge side this season, and according to team manager Joey McGahan, he hasn’t taken a backward step.

“He is a wrecking ball with a massive motor,” McGahan said.

Emmaus College players during the Rockhampton Schools Rugby League Year 10 grand final against St Brendan’s College last year.

“He will be playing in the second row and he should play most minutes. He doesn’t like coming from the field. When I was running (water) for (the Challenge team) last year he didn’t ever want to come off. He will run himself into the ground for the team.

Nilon won’t be the only player looking to make an impact for the Emmaus side with representative players Liam Barnes, Isaac Walker, Seth Carpenter and Baylee Meilland returning for their another crack at the Dolphins Cup.

While the prospects at The Cathedral College might remain a bit of an unknown for the Emmaus coaching staff, they do know it is going to be a tough first round clash.

The two sides have a great rivalry that spans several decades, and will be reignited in the Dolphins Cup as they aim to unseat Central Queensland powerhouse St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon.

“It is the game that our boys have been looking forward to the most,” McGahan said.

“The guys just want to get off to a positive start.”
