Emilee Hill believes there are two key ingredients that have helped her young softball career flourish.
“Effort and accountability,” the 14-year-old declares as she counts down to her first national duty on the diamonds.
Hill will represent Australia at the 2025 World Baseball Softball Confederation under-15 girls World Cup in Italy.
Equally accomplished as a catcher or on third base and more than capable with bat in hand, she is determined to help her team to a top-three finish at the tournament, to be played from June 27 to July 6.
“It means so much to be able to travel the world playing the sport I love,” she said from her home of Rockhampton.
“It’s good to represent my town and my family and all the hard work I’ve done.
“It will be a pretty honourable moment to wear the green and gold for the first time.”
Hill is excited to be part of what she says is a “very strong” Aussie line-up, and keen to gain more valuable international experience, having previously played at events in Japan and New Zealand.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how the different countries play and building more friendships with players from different states in Australia,” she said.
The rising star’s selection followed a stellar performance for Queensland at the under-16 nationals in Perth in January.
It’s the greatest achievement to date for Hill, who credits her Rockhampton rep coach of three years Ross Tickle with helping improve her skill set.
Tickle cannot speak highly enough of his young charge, who is on an upward trajectory.
“She is going from a player with a lot of raw talent to a player who is developing her technique to a point where she can be playing for Australia,” he said.
“Her greatest strengths are her work ethic, her composure and her leadership.
“This Australian selection is a great achievement and well-deserved. She really puts in the effort.”
Hill got her introduction to the bat and ball sport at school in Year 5 and instantly fell in love with it.
“I thought I was all right at it,” she says modestly.
“I started playing every Saturday and then went away to represent my town and then Queensland.”
Hill quickly secured a place in Rockhampton and Capricornia teams and scored Queensland Country honours before her state under-16 selection.
She currently plays in the Rockhampton Softball competition with Bluebirds in both the under-16 mixed and B ladies divisions.
She is passionate about her sport and practises four to five times a week.
Hill also wants to make every post a winner, with another call-up for the Queensland under-16s and then under-18s firmly on her radar.
“I just want to keep working on the way I play and getting a greater understanding of the game,” she said.
