Lachlan Hubner’s rugby league journey should provide inspiration and motivation for the region’s aspiring footy players, according to CQ Capras’ coach Lionel Harbin.
The utility forward has been signed by NRL club South Sydney until the end of the 2026 season.
It comes after the 24-year-old made his NRL debut for the Dolphins in Round 6 this year, and went on to play three more games for the club (Rounds 23, 24 and 26).
The Rabbitohs then secured his signature, with their head of football Mark Ellison saying in a statement that Hubner was “extremely keen” to experience more NRL football.
“From our research on, and discussions with, Lachlan, he has the desire, the hunger and the work ethic to take the next step in his rugby league journey here at South Sydney,” he said.
“With hard work and determination, he may get that opportunity here at the Rabbitohs.”
If that’s what it takes, then Harbin knows Hubner is well on the way.
“Lachie’s is a great story,” he said.
“He’s put in the time and effort to get to where he is.
“He always had an NRL mindset. He just seemed a class above but that was down to his effort and the way he approached his game and his training.
“It’s a really good reward for him and it sends a strong message to all the players in our squad and all the rugby players in our region.
“It shows that if you stay consistent and be persistent, the opportunities will come.
“We talk about how a lot of young players have aspirations to play NRL, well don’t wait until you get an NRL contract to be an NRL player.”
A Norths Knights’ junior who captained the Emmaus College First XIII, Hubner played 72 games for the Capras in the Hostplus Cup.
He debuted in Round 1 of 2021 and after a standout showing, was awarded the club’s Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards at season’s end.
Harbin said the Capras had a number of players who were in a position to follow in his footsteps.
“Hubby was a 21-year-old who came into our Cup squad and had a really good year,” he said.
“We’ve got a few guys in the same boat; they have come into the squad and are looking to press their claims to play Cup and go onto that next level.”
