The CQ Capras under-21s will take plenty of confidence from their gutsy come-from-behind win against the Mackay Cutters, according to coach Kane Hardy.
Trailing 18-12 at half-time, they ran in four second-half tries to notch a 32-24 victory in front of a parochial home crowd at Rockhampton’s Browne Park.
Prop Maea Mitchell and five-eighth Jake Barham both bagged a double, while forwards Mitchell Leard-Lamont and Jordan Heke completed the scoring.
The Capras men returned to the winner’s circle with a 30-22 win over the Cutters in Round 15 of the Hostplus Cup, with prop Bailey Butler crossing for two tries.
Hardy was impressed with the character every one of his U21 players showed in what was the team’s second win from its nine games this season.
“It was good; gutsy is probably the best way to put it,” he said.
“They stayed in the fight and they wanted to keep fighting. They wanted to win and they found a way to win.”
Hardy said front rower Leard-Lamont was “phenomenal” in his first game back from an eye socket injury.
He also praised Marcus Tanner who led from the front at halfback, prop Bailey Cavanough who was huge in his 73 minutes on-ground and centre Kurtis Farr who was outstanding with his carries and defence.
Hardy said it had been a tough start to the season for his new-look outfit, which features just a handful of players from the 2022 team which made it to the preliminary final.
“We’ve got a lot of new faces, a lot of young faces, a lot of boys from local league who haven’t played at this level,” he said.
“They’re learning some good lessons. It’s been hard; we’ve played against some real quality opposition and we’ve played every top team but the way they’ve transferred that learning onto the field in the last two weeks does remind me a bit of last year’s team.”
The Capras Colts have a bye this coming weekend, while the men head to Port Moresby to tackle the PNG Hunters.
Meanwhile, the Cutters squads take on Ipswich Jets at Ipswich.
